AFRISTAT
AFRISTAT is an international organization created in 1993 to help member states improve their capacity to collect and manage socio-economic and environmental statistics.

DevInfo
A number of UN agencies have developed a database system called DevInfo, which operates both as a desktop application and on the Web in order to permit users to handle and present socio-economic data dynamically. DevInfo requires a Windows operating system and a version of Microsoft Office with Access, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Algeria National Office of Statistics
The National Office of Statistics website is available in Arabic, French, and English. But the English site is still under construction. There is a full publications catalog, with information on how to obtain individual print copies and subscriptions. In addition, a little statistical information is maintained online, such as demographic statistics, through 2004,

Bénin National Institute of Statistics and Economic Analysis
The website of the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Analysis, which is in French only, is still largely "under construction." None of the databases have been mounted yet, for example. The Institute's bulletins are available online, however, as are a few socio-economic indicators in education, health, population, etc.

Botswana Central Statistical Office
The Central Statistical Office website does not provide access to full-text statistical reports or the most recent census (2001). Visitors to the site, however, will find some tables from the census and also socio-economic indicators, such as agriculture, education, health, and population. The source is listed in each case; in addition, there is a bibliography of CSO publications at the end of the "dissemination" page with information on price for print copies and publication frequency. It is not clear when the site was last updated.

Burkina Faso National Institute for Statistics and Demography
This website, which is in French only, is not up-to-date, but it does contain a number of older INSD publications, as well as more recent reports published by the National Observatory on Poverty and Sustainable Development and also sectoral publications from the ministries of Health, Education and Secondary and Higher Education.

Cape Verde National Statistics Institute
The National Statistics Institute (INE) website is in Portuguese only; an English-language translation is "under construction." Although many links do not work, some do. By clicking on Cape Verde in numbers, you can obtain data from the 2000 census by location and sector. There is also a link to abstracts of articles published at INE about its statistics collection and analysis. In addition, although the 2000 census results are not online in their entirety, visitors can read and download in PDF format the census methodology

Chad National Office for Statistics, Economic Studies, and Demography
This website, which is available in French only, contains reports and bulletins in PDF format published by INSEED and some socio-economic data in table format.

Côte d'Ivoire National Institute of Statistics
The website, which is in French only, is somewhat limited. Visitors who click on statistics will find tables for cyclical and structural data. There is a 2002 publications catalogue, but no publications are available online.

Djibouti Ministry of the Economy, Finance, and Privatization Planning
The Ministry of the Economy, Finance, and Privatization Planning serves as Djibouti's statistics office. It compiles and makes available annual databases for population, employment, education and health, etc. Visitors to the site, which is almost entirely in French, will also find information on the consumer price index, external commerce, poverty profiles prepared for the UN Development Program, and a number of reports, such as the 2004 Poverty Reduction Strategic Plan (in an English-language translation).

Egypt Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics
The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) is the official source for the provision of data, statistics, and reports for state agencies and authorities, universities, research centers, and international organizations. The English-language site, whose URL is given above, is somewhat limited. It includes a small number of indicators on prices, labor, foreign trade, and population. You will also find bulletins and special studies in population, health, education, and other socio-economic sectors. All documents are in flat tables or PDF format. The Arabic-language site is located at http://www.capmas.gov.eg/home.htm and may contain more information, also in PDF format.

Ethiopia Central Statistics Agency
The Central Statistics Agency website is publishing online reports and statistical information in a number of sectors. Some of the reports are in PDF format, such as the Atlas on Selected Welfare Indicators of Ethiopian Households and the Atlas of the Ethiopian Economy. But beware because some of the files are very large. The Atlas is a 171 MB file, for example. Although most of the links on the site work, the ones in the gray box at the left do not. A number of surveys are available on CD-ROM and online. In addition, the CSA has inaugurated EthioInfo, a customized adaptation of DevInfo. It is available online and on CD-ROM. The EthioInfo CD-ROM has a training tutorial; the online version does not.

Ethiopia Ministry of Health
The Ministry of Health of Ethiopia maintains a publications page on its website, with the full text of health indicators (dating to the 1990's), but other documents are more recent, such as evaluations of the health sector development program and a variety of reports, including one on AIDS in Ethiopia (2004).

Gabon Directorate for Statistics and Economic Studies
The Directorate for Statistics and Economic Studies website, which is in French only, mounts cyclical and structural data in Excel and tabular format on the Web as well as demographic/health information, also in tabular format. Gabon is participating in an AFRISTAT initiative to allow visitors to access live data online, but has not yet mounted anything.

The Gambia Central Statistics Department
The Central Statistics Department, which is located in the Department of State for Finance and Economic Affairs. It is responsible for the collection, compilation, analysis, and publication of statistical information. The website contains documentation in PDF and Microsoft Word formats, through 2003, on health, education, and research carried out at the CSD.

The Gambia Department of State for Education
The Department of State for Education maintains a website where you will find a number of up-to-date sectoral publications, including the "Education Statistics Brief, 2005/2006" and statistical abstracts through July 2007. All documents are in PDF or Microsoft Word format.

Ghana Statistical Service
The website makes available information about Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) reports. A number of tables from the 2000 population and housing census, census, for example, can be downloaded in Excel format, but the full report is in print form only and must be ordered from GSS. There is also a lengthy description of the contents of the Health, Nutrition, and Environmental Statistics report, but full text is in print form only. But Ghana in Figures and some other reports can be downloaded in full form the site. Requests for all reports can be sent by email or by fax. An order form is available on the website. In addition, the GSS is implementing GhanaInfo, the DevInfo system to systematize, store, and analyze socio-development indicators. The full CD-ROM can be downloaded onto the user's hard drive. (The link did not work when we tried to access it on several occasions.)

Guiné-Bissau National Institute for Statistics and the Census
The National Institute for Statistics and the Census is housed within the Ministry of Economics. The website, which is in Spanish only, does not contain very much yet, although it is possible to download some data in html or PDF format. Much of the data is not current, however. Tables for population are from the 1991 census, although there is a population estimate for 2007. The tables for education provide data for 1980 and 1990. Statistical information on the health infrastructure and disease burden is more recent, however.

Guinée National Institute of Statistics
The National Institute of Statistics website, which is in French only, has mounted a publications list, but documents are not online and must be ordered. The Institute has mounted statistical information in tabular format on cyclical and structural data. Categories are then subdivided. The population tables, for example are divided into categories, such as population by region and sex, by economic activity and sex, etc. This data is from 1996, however. Statistics for education are more recent; dates are not always given for statistics in the health sector.

Kenya National Coordinating Agency for Population and Development
The National Coordinating Agency for Population and Development hosts PPD in Kenya. The website aims to facilitate better coordination and management of population concerns in Kenya by providing information on population and Development. There is an excellent publications page with links to full-text documents published by the NCAPD, including reports and conference papers. There is also a "Population and Development Resources Database," with contact information on organizations working in a variety of focus areas.
