AFRISTAT
AFRISTAT is an international organization created in 1993 to help member states improve their capacity to collect and manage socio-economic and environmental statistics.

DevInfo
A number of UN agencies have developed a database system called DevInfo, which operates both as a desktop application and on the Web in order to permit users to handle and present socio-economic data dynamically. DevInfo requires a Windows operating system and a version of Microsoft Office with Access, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The National Office of Statistics website is available in Arabic, French, and English. But the English site is still under construction. There is a full publications catalog, with information on how to obtain individual print copies and subscriptions. In addition, a little statistical information is maintained online, such as demographic statistics, through 2004,

Bénin National Institute of Statistics and Economic Analysis
The website of the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Analysis, which is in French only, is still largely "under construction." None of the databases have been mounted yet, for example. The Institute's bulletins are available online, however, as are a few socio-economic indicators in education, health, population, etc.

Botswana Central Statistical Office
The Central Statistical Office website does not provide access to full-text statistical reports or the most recent census (2001). Visitors to the site, however, will find some tables from the census and also socio-economic indicators, such as agriculture, education, health, and population. The source is listed in each case; in addition, there is a bibliography of CSO publications at the end of the "dissemination" page with information on price for print copies and publication frequency. It is not clear when the site was last updated.

Burkina Faso National Institute for Statistics and Demography
This website, which is in French only, is not up-to-date, but it does contain a number of older INSD publications, as well as more recent reports published by the National Observatory on Poverty and Sustainable Development and also sectoral publications from the ministries of Health, Education and Secondary and Higher Education.

Cape Verde National Statistics Institute
The National Statistics Institute (INE) website is in Portuguese only; an English-language translation is "under construction." Although many links do not work, some do. By clicking on Cape Verde in numbers, you can obtain data from the 2000 census by location and sector. There is also a link to abstracts of articles published at INE about its statistics collection and analysis. In addition, although the 2000 census results are not online in their entirety, visitors can read and download in PDF format the census methodology

Chad National Office for Statistics, Economic Studies, and Demography
This website, which is available in French only, contains reports and bulletins in PDF format published by INSEED and some socio-economic data in table format.

Côte d'Ivoire National Institute of Statistics
The website, which is in French only, is somewhat limited. Visitors who click on statistics will find tables for cyclical and structural data. There is a 2002 publications catalogue, but no publications are available online.

Djibouti Ministry of the Economy, Finance, and Privatization Planning
The Ministry of the Economy, Finance, and Privatization Planning serves as Djibouti's statistics office. It compiles and makes available annual databases for population, employment, education and health, etc. Visitors to the site, which is almost entirely in French, will also find information on the consumer price index, external commerce, poverty profiles prepared for the UN Development Program, and a number of reports, such as the 2004 Poverty Reduction Strategic Plan (in an English-language translation).

Egypt Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics
The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) is the official source for the provision of data, statistics, and reports for state agencies and authorities, universities, research centers, and international organizations. The English-language site, whose URL is given above, is somewhat limited. It includes a small number of indicators on prices, labor, foreign trade, and population. You will also find bulletins and special studies in population, health, education, and other socio-economic sectors. All documents are in flat tables or PDF format. The Arabic-language site is located at http://www.capmas.gov.eg/home.htm and may contain more information, also in PDF format.

Ethiopia Central Statistics Agency
The Central Statistics Agency website is publishing online reports and statistical information in a number of sectors. Some of the reports are in PDF format, such as the Atlas on Selected Welfare Indicators of Ethiopian Households and the Atlas of the Ethiopian Economy. But beware because some of the files are very large. The Atlas is a 171 MB file, for example. Although most of the links on the site work, the ones in the gray box at the left do not. A number of surveys are available on CD-ROM and online. In addition, the CSA has inaugurated EthioInfo, a customized adaptation of DevInfo. It is available online and on CD-ROM. The EthioInfo CD-ROM has a training tutorial; the online version does not.

Ethiopia Ministry of Health
The Ministry of Health of Ethiopia maintains a publications page on its website, with the full text of health indicators (dating to the 1990's), but other documents are more recent, such as evaluations of the health sector development program and a variety of reports, including one on AIDS in Ethiopia (2004).

Gabon Directorate for Statistics and Economic Studies
The Directorate for Statistics and Economic Studies website, which is in French only, mounts cyclical and structural data in Excel and tabular format on the Web as well as demographic/health information, also in tabular format. Gabon is participating in an AFRISTAT initiative to allow visitors to access live data online, but has not yet mounted anything.

The Gambia Central Statistics Department
The Central Statistics Department, which is located in the Department of State for Finance and Economic Affairs. It is responsible for the collection, compilation, analysis, and publication of statistical information. The website contains documentation in PDF and Microsoft Word formats, through 2003, on health, education, and research carried out at the CSD.

The Gambia Department of State for Education
The Department of State for Education maintains a website where you will find a number of up-to-date sectoral publications, including the "Education Statistics Brief, 2005/2006" and statistical abstracts through July 2007. All documents are in PDF or Microsoft Word format.

Ghana Statistical Service
The website makes available information about Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) reports. A number of tables from the 2000 population and housing census, census, for example, can be downloaded in Excel format, but the full report is in print form only and must be ordered from GSS. There is also a lengthy description of the contents of the Health, Nutrition, and Environmental Statistics report, but full text is in print form only. But Ghana in Figures and some other reports can be downloaded in full form the site. Requests for all reports can be sent by email or by fax. An order form is available on the website. In addition, the GSS is implementing GhanaInfo, the DevInfo system to systematize, store, and analyze socio-development indicators. The full CD-ROM can be downloaded onto the user's hard drive. (The link did not work when we tried to access it on several occasions.)

Guiné-Bissau National Institute for Statistics and the Census
The National Institute for Statistics and the Census is housed within the Ministry of Economics. The website, which is in Spanish only, does not contain very much yet, although it is possible to download some data in html or PDF format. Much of the data is not current, however. Tables for population are from the 1991 census, although there is a population estimate for 2007. The tables for education provide data for 1980 and 1990. Statistical information on the health infrastructure and disease burden is more recent, however.

Guinée National Institute of Statistics
The National Institute of Statistics website, which is in French only, has mounted a publications list, but documents are not online and must be ordered. The Institute has mounted statistical information in tabular format on cyclical and structural data. Categories are then subdivided. The population tables, for example are divided into categories, such as population by region and sex, by economic activity and sex, etc. This data is from 1996, however. Statistics for education are more recent; dates are not always given for statistics in the health sector.

Kenya National Coordinating Agency for Population and Development
The National Coordinating Agency for Population and Development hosts PPD in Kenya. The website aims to facilitate better coordination and management of population concerns in Kenya by providing information on population and Development. There is an excellent publications page with links to full-text documents published by the NCAPD, including reports and conference papers. There is also a "Population and Development Resources Database," with contact information on organizations working in a variety of focus areas.

Kenya Central Bureau of Statistics
The Central Bureau of Statistics, which is an arm of the National Ministry of Planning and Development, maintains a database of sectoral surveys in agriculture; health; income, expenditures, and poverty; population and demography; etc., although not all of the links work. You can also download a number of full-text documents, including the 2007 economic survey abstract. All documents on this website are in PDF or table format; they cannot be manipulated.

Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services
The Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) was created as an autonomous agency in 2004. It is responsible for the compilation, analysis, publication and dissemination of all data produced by government and other agencies within Liberia. The site is under construction, and very few of the links work yet.

Madagascar National Institute of Statistics
The National Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) website, which is in French only, provides information on economic indicators, the country's national strategy for statistical development. Under "Products and Services," the visitor will find a list of publications, with summaries in PDF format and graphs. There is only one population census listed-from1993-and summaries of each section are available, not full text. Madagascar participated in MICS, but the link takes to you the UNICEF home page. Recent socio-economic information can also be found by clicking on INSTAT "Point Information." There is a full list of studies and the full text in PDF format.

Malawi National Statistics Office
The National Statistics Office website aims "to provide high quality,timely and independent statistical information and promote its use for policy formulation,decision-making,research,transparency and general public awareness." Data on the site include an atlas of social statistics; welfare monitoring surveys; monthly, quarterly, and annual statistical bulletins; and demographic and health surveys.

Malawi Socio-Economic Database
The Malawi Socio-Economic Database (MASEDA) is the first comprehensive and current socio-economic database on the situation of human development in Malawi. It was created by the NSO in collaboration with DevInfo and other agencies. It is being distributed on CD-ROM within Malawi. A web version is available, as well, using DevInfo software.

Mali National Directorate of Statistics and Data Processing
The website of the National Directorate of Statistics and Data Processing is in French only. There are only a few reports and statistics available for downloading from the website, but it does contain some socio-economic data through 2001. There is also a complete publications catalogue. Older publications must be ordered in print form. Some newer publications are available online.

Mauritania National Statistics Office
The National Statistics Office website, which is in French only, mounts a considerable amount of information online. Visitors will be able to view and download the most recent publications, through September 2007, and statistical indicators in table format for population, health, education, etc.

Mauritius Central Statistics Office
The Central Statistics Office website makes available the most current information for economic and social indicators and census and survey reports. There is also an "historical series," with tables in Excel format back to 1974 in some instances. Clicking on "publications" will take you to economic and social indicators, the monthly Consumer Price Index, and censuses and surveys. For each sector you can download reports and tables in PDF, Word, and Excel format. There are both shorter quarterly reports and longer annual reports for each sector. In addition, there is a "students' corner," where students can obtain a better idea of what the world of statistics is all about.

This website, which is in French only, has a full publications list, all of which are available in PDF format online. There are also a few socio-economic indicators in table format. There is also a good glossary.

Mozambique National Institute of Statistics
Information about the National Institute of Statistics (INE) website is available in both English and Portuguese, but the statistical databases are only in Portuguese. The site contains Excel spreadsheets, tables, and graphs on Mozamibque's climate; population and social indicators; agriculture; energy; transport and communications; macro-economics; etc. There is also information about the 2007 census and earlier ones. In addition, INE participates in the DevInfo, initiative, and is mounting online a searchable social and demographic statistical database system (ESDEM). ESDEM is available for downloade form the INEP website or on CD-ROM. There is a user's manual in PDF format, in both English and Portuguese. The manual can probably be used for any other DevInfo downloads, such as from Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, etc.

Namibia Central Bureau of Statistics
Prior to independence in 1990, no statistical organization existed in Namibia. A local section of the South African Statistical Services was responsible for the collection of statistics. The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) was created after independence under an inherited 1976 statistics act. The CBS website makes available information about the various divisions and statistics collection in Namibia; a summary of 2001 census results, primarily in tabular format; and some information about the Consumer Price Index in PDF format. On the Publications page, the CBS has mounted reports in PDF format on Namibia's National Accounts and the preliminary report of the 2003/2004 Household Income and Expenditure Survey.

Niger National Institute of Statistics
The National Institute of Statistics website has a full annotated publications list, but no full text available on the site. There are statistics, however, in tabular format, subdivided by subject. It's a little complicated to navigate. After clicking on the subject tab, statistical information is sub-divided and listed in the left-hand column. In addition, together with other African Francophone countries, Niger is participating in a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)/AFRISTAT initiative on poverty reduction. Full reports, such as Niger's 2004 report on human development, are available on the INS website by clicking on SRP/OMD. There is also a separate Sustainable Development and Poverty Reduction website for Niger at http://www.sdrp-niger.ne .

Nigeria National Bureau of Statistics
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) mounts a number of reports in PDF and Word formats on its website-the Nigeria Poverty Report for 2004, annual statistical abstracts for 2006, etc. You can also search by sector-and pull up information about the sector and how data is collected. Frustratingly, the link for detailed reports from the sector division did not work.

Nigeria National Population Commission
The National Population Commission (NPC) was established to collect, analyze, and disseminate population/demographic data for Nigeria. The site contains information about Nigeria's 2006 census as well as the full text of a number of reports, such as the demographic and health survey of 2003. Not all of the links work, however. The publications link is not functional, but NPC publications can also be found by clicking on "downloads."

Republic of the Congo National Center for Statistics and Economic Studies
This website, which is in French only, contains a range of statistics in table format on the consumer price index, industry, education, demography, health, etc. There is also a publications list, some of them available for downloading on the Web. Unfortunately, not all of the links work.

Rwanda Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning
The Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning serves as Rwanda's national statistics office. A number of financial and other documents are available on the website, but no census data or socio-economic indicators. In addition, only the English-language part of the site works in order to enter from the home page.

This site, which is available in English and French, provides information about Rwanda's 2002 census, together with brief descriptions of results, concepts, and explanations. Publications available for downloading in Word or PDF format include, the report of preliminary results, the 2002 census in brief, final results, and a census synthesis.

São Tomé e Príncipe National Bureau of Statistics
The National Bureau of Statistics website, which is available in Portuguese only, has mounted some statistical data in PDF and Web formats. But not all of the links work. For detailed reports on S. The National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD), which is in French only, is being reorganized, but there are visitors will find full-text publications, primarily on economics. A click on national statistics and studies, will take you to a page that describes projects focusing on population, but no full-text document are available at this writing.

Statistics Sierra Leone
With the help of the World Bank, Sierra Leone is now rebuilding its statistics capacity. A final report is expected by the end of the year, the draft consultation document is available on the Statistics Sierra Leone website. Although the full analytical reports of the 2004 Population and Housing Census are only available in print form, the tables can be downloaded in PDF format, as are summaries of each module. The site also mounts Annual Statistical Digests.

South Africa Department of Social Development
The Department of Social Development is responsible for South Africa's population and development programs. Its website makes available in PDF format a range of research reports, presentations, and other materials. The website has also created a repository of documentation from the African Population Commission.

Stats South Africa
Stats South Africa is responsible for collecting, maintaining, and disseminating South Africa's statistical information. All of its publications are available on the website. The website is also notable because it guides visitors on how to use and compare statistical information. You will find statistical tables, documents in PDF format, and access to interactive data on the site. You must register to access the interactive data part of the site, but it is free of charge.

Sudan Central Bureau of Statistics
The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) website, which is in English and in Arabic, mounts the reports it publishes, including the 2007 Household Health Survey, Sudan in Figures, 202-2006, and the Statistical Yearbook for 2006. There are a number of statistical tables-for population, the consumer price index, foreign trade, and national income. Not all of the links work, including the link to censuses, unfortunately.

Tanzania National Bureau of Standards
The National Bureau of Standards website, which is in English and Swahili, contains a plethora of current information in PDF and tabular format. Tanzania is another country working with DevIno to create an interactive socio-economic database called the Tanzania Socio-Economic Database (TSED), which can be downloaded onto a desktop computer. The NBS is noteworthy, however, because it also makes available in tabular and PDF format an abridged version of TSED.

Tunisia National Statistics Institute
This website is available in French only. The Arabic and English sites are still under construction. There are a number of ways to access data on the site-by clicking on any of the indicators in social and economic databases in the left-hand column and also by clicking on statistical information on top. You can also download the Institute's full-text studies in PDF format, free of charge, such as population statistics and projections. But although there is a description of the document's contents in French, all of them are in Arabic. None has been translated into French or English. You can also order these reports in CD-ROM or print format, for a fee.

Uganda Bureau of Standards
The Uganda Bureau of Standards (UBOS) website makes available many reports in PDF and tabular formats. The site is a little complicated to navigate, however. Clicking on "publications" elicits a list of UBOS publications, but no links to documentation. On the right hand side of the page, one can link to full-text documents, such as the full text in PDF format of demographic and health survey reports. It is also possible to order CD-ROMs of these sectoral reports. Clickong on "reports" on the home page brings up another set of documentation. UBOS is also cooperating with ˆDevInfo to make available an interactive database called Uganda Info that can be downloaded online.

Zambia Central Statistical Office
The Central Statistical Office publishes a wide range of reports, much of which is available online in PDF format. These include the full report from the 2000 census, including sectoral reports for agriculture, housing, migration, and urbanization. There is also a census atlas. The 2007 demographic and health survey is underway; information about the survey is available on the site. Unfortunately, reports from the earlier survey are not mounted. Visitors will also find education surveys, reports on the consumer price index, and more.

Zimbabwe Central Statistics Office
Although the statistics on the front page of the Central Statistical Office (CSO) are current, it appears that the most recent data in the reports and analyses listed on the website are from 2002-2003, although there are a few reports listed on the publications page for 2004. None of the reports listed in "publications" is available on the website, but there are a few tables of contents mounted online. Reports must be ordered in print form from the CSO. The CSO is participating in the DevInfo initiatives, and it is possible to download the Zimdat database onto your desktop computer.
